All People around The World Pray For Indonesia

Now, my motherland is crying again. October 26 2010 noted: some huge disaster happened in Indonesia-my beloved motherland again: Tsunami at Mentawai Islands West Sumatra, Mount Merapi eruption at Yogyakarta-Middle Java, Wasior Flash Flood that killed hundreds of people. Why Indonesia? Why disaster? Is it reminder from God that we mean nothing? Is it reprimand for our arrogance  so far? We should back to God, introspect ourselves! Whatever disaster happen there must be some reasons. Then, please pray for Indonesia.

Indonesia Oh Indonesia. Here, and only here many sad stories, bad news frequently happens. Why Indonesia? Why in this World’s largest Muslim Country? are there somethings wrong happen? Ask to our own heart! Cause in the bottom of our heart may we will find the answer. Personally, it reminds me to remember that it is wrong time to be arrogant, egoist , consumptive. It reminds me that there are so many our country brothers and sisters  are less lucky and we need to care each other.

Stop crying Indonesia ! Keep Fight For Better Life ! Whatever happen, We still love you!

Blangkon : The exsiccated Traditional Javanese – Cap

Have a look at the cap wore by this guy? it is very cool and nice cap, right? FYI, It is genuine Javanese traditional cap, what called Blangkon. Herewith, I will tell you more about this nice cap. Do you interest it?

Blangkon usually is wore by Javanese Gentleman, but not for Javanese ladies. Some decades ago, all Javanese Gentlemen always wear this cap in his daily life. But, nowadays since the massive expansion of global culture attacks, it is very strange you can find Javanese gentlemen wear this very nice cap. However, may you can still find this ‘strange’ Javanese gentlemen with Blangkon at his head in Keraton Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta Palace), and Keraton Solo (Solo Palace) only. Both palaces are in Middle Java region. You can also find Japanese Gentlemen with Blangkon in very very special moment or ceremony, such as in Javanese traditional wedding ceremony or another traditional ceremony such as “Sunatan” (circumcision) ceremony.

Blangkon is made from fabric with Batik motif. I am very sure that you have been familiar with batik, right?. Batik is  just another fabric motif design as depicted in the background of above-mentioned picture. Batik can be differed by four models, i.e Ngayogjakarta, Surakarta, Kedu and Banyumasan. Each model refer to city where this Blangkon come from. What make them different is the location of Blangkon’s bulge. Bulge is usually indicate where the hair is hidden inside this Blangkon. Last decades ago many Javanese gentlemen with long hair.

Although it is not easy to find Javanese Gentlemen with Blangkon at this days, However it is not difficult to find it when you visit Indonesia. You can find it easily in many traditional markets in Yogyakarta and Surakarta. In East Java we can find it in some cultural tourism destination such as in Jatim Park. Above depicted Blangkon is grabbed from Jatim Park, Batu Malang East Java. Blangkon is absolutely affordable. You can get it, by spending your 1-2 dollars only.

Blangkon is one of many local heritages of Java. It is an identity of Javanese, that makes different them with other ethnics, and nations. It is regretful, since we know the fact that Blangkon is annihilated from its existence. I bet it is caused by identity crisis of Indonesians, especially Javanese, and especially its youth. They think that everything come from western is more modern, better, and more prestigious. They feel ashamed with their own identity. Health personality, is the one that not easy to be affected by others. Contrarily, Health personality is the one that pride with what they owns. As Indonesian, and as Javanese, there is a calling from the depth of my hearth to keep, conserve  and nurture this highly valuable local heritage.

Let us be proud with Blangkon !

Jatim Park : The exotic of East Java Indonesia Culture and Nature

Rarely, I can enjoy my holiday even in each my single weekend.  Many things want to do, in my very-very limited  time, make me sacrifice my holidays for doing activities that I think it is much more important. Usually, I always go out  city Surabaya, Fortunately, I am yet to be having family that set me free to do what I want to do.

Thanks God last weeks i.e. April 4th 2010, finally I can enjoy my unplanned holiday :D. Actually, I just want to see my little brother for a while in Malang. However, accidentally my room’s keys is left in Malang, and the worse case is I just realize it when I have been in Jombang. Hardly, I have to come back to Malang. From Malang, I plan to go to Sampang Madura. But, I realize that am not Superman and I do not want my body is dropped. Finally, I decide to enjoy my holiday in Malang :p i.e. Jatim Park, Batu Malang. Herewith, I am telling you about this nice place.

Jawa Timur Park ( East Java Park ) is located in Batu city, it is nearby from Malang city. It is about 1 hour trip by using public transport. From Malang you can take “Lyn” (it is van-like public transport)  with destination to Landung Sari Terminal ( I mean terminal here is Lyn station), its about 15 minutes. You will be charged Rp. 2.500 ,- . From Landung Sari Terminal, you must take another “Lyn” to Batu terminal. Just ask to anybody in Landung Sari terminal which lyn will proceed you to Batu terminal. It is pink-colored one. You will be dropped in Batu Terminal, and be charged Rp. 2.500. From Batu terminal, unfortunately there is no public transport taking you into Jatim Park. But, do not worry, you can reach it by on foot while enjoying the fascinating nature of Batu. Batu is highland with comfort and cool temperature making you joyful to inhale fresh air here. I can make you sure, it is joyful trip by on foot. Moreover, if you come with your lovely friends.

To enter this Jatim Park, you will be charged Rp. 45.000 ,- in weekend and holidays (Friday-Sunday) and Rp. 35.000 ,- in Workdays. I think this charge is affordable and worthy with the facilities are given. What kind of facilities that Jatim Park offers? Herewith,  I am telling you. Generally, Jatim Park offers two kinds of facilities i.e. learning and recreation. For learning facilities, Jatim park provide what I called Cultural Outlet from all around Indonesia, especially from East Java. Have a look and enjoy bellows pictures! It is wonderful outlet for those interesting to know and learn about Indonesian culture.

In this Science Outlet there are many fundamental concepts in physics, biology, mathematics, and chemistry are explained easily and very-very interestingly. Such as theories about sounds, acoustics, mirror, anatomy, algebra, viscosity theory. You can learn by playing it.

Jatim Park also provides Flora and Fauna Parks such as Bird and Reptile Park that I think the collection is complete enough. For recreation,  Jatim Park provides many interesting playing zone that i think it is compareable with Dunia Fantasi at Jakarta. The most interesting playing zones for us are Pipe House and Ghost house. It is very excited playing zone that not easy to be forgotten. Swimming Pool also provided inside Jatim Park. For those interest in Culinary, Do not worry you can find East Java Food with affordable price here. For those Muslims, there is good, clean and wide enough mosque inside for you for praying while enjoying your holidays. I think Jatim Park is right choice for you to run away for a while from your tedious daily activities, to recharge your energy, to refresh your mind befor going back to your daily activities. See you then, at Jatim Park Batu Malang. Bye…. !!

when the students are : Less Motivated and Mark Oriented

I am dreaming someday education in Indonesia is like education in developed country. A campus is fully occupied by highly motivated and hard studying students,  In each single place of campus is fully by student discussing their learning. Campus library is fulled by student learning until late in the night.

I am very sure the future of Indonesia as a nation is strongly depended on how the education in this country. Knowing the education in Indonesia nowadays,  I am afraid and worried about the future of this nation. Regardless how the facilities of  education in Indonesia,  while knowing how the condition of the student really make me sad. As a lecturer in one of leading University in Indonesia, I know well how the condition of student in Indonesia. Frankly speaking, I can say that the student in Indonesia is less motivated and mark oriented.

A case example, when I deliver lecture material in front of class, I frequently wonder to my students: is there any question? It is rarely there will be question. But, when I change the rule by promising them to give extra mark, many student will raise their hand up and ask me “silly” question. They will not study if there is no quiz, no assignment, or test. They will do something, only if they are given reward that is Grade. They are not interested with what their lecturer given, but Grade.  They will hardly complaint if their mark is not like their expectation, many student will come to their lecturer office to try their very best to get better mark. But, they do not care whether they understand or do not what their lecturer delivered in Class. So far, every day I always get student come to my office, but there is no student come to discuss about lecture material in Class. They come to say sorry because of late submission of assignment or test.

“Sir, please do not deduct my mark, please please give me Full Mark Sir”.

No one come to my office and says:

“I am sorry Sir, I do not really understand with this thing, would you like to explain me again?” or

“I am sorry Sir, I do not agree with your opinion that…., in my opinion……”

Lecturer that is generous in giving mark, will be the most favorite lecturer, although he/she is not expert in his/her area. Lecturer that is very strict in giving mark will be “Monster” that is the most unwanted lecturer, although he/she is professor that is very very expert in his/her area.

Sometime, I wonder what are they looking for in this University? Just a piece of bachelor degree certificate with CGPA = 4? what is it for, if they know and can do nothing ! It is even getting worse, when it is known that there is barely student that like Programming, in Information System department. I think it is embarrassing, they will graduate with Sarjana Komputer (Bachelor of Computer Science), but they do not like Programming and can not develop program. It  sounds  weird, but it is truly happen. They graduated from Information System Department, but do not know much about Information System.

In my opinion, university students nowadays are highly affected by “POP Culture”. They only want to be happy, happy in all days. Hang out with their friends just to make happy. They are less hard working, less motivated students. It is rarely view, you can see student in Campus bringing thick text book, read and  discus it with their friend. But, in each single of campus you can easily see student facing their laptop updating their facebook, plurk, or twitter. They use Internet for accessing social network website.  What about library? the backbound of campus Life. I think you know the answer, no student come in this damned place. Library is the most silent place from student.

Knowing this matter, How is the future of this nation?  God knows the answer. As a lecturer, I just have an audacity of hope someday everything will be getting better and better. It is big homework for me, how to make a campus to be real campus. I just want Campus is  not just like a market in which money and bachelor degree certificate is exchanged. I just do hope a campus will be an agent of change, changing for better Indonesia, better life and better humanity.

Sampang: the new Journey destination of my teaching activities

Sampang? hu hu … I have ever heard the name but I have never come in. It is a city in the middle of  Madura Island. Madura Island  is a famous island in East Java, Indonesia. Madurese is one of well-known  ethnics in Indonesia for their dauntless character. This ethnic spread out at almost all around Indonesia. Madurese has their own unique local language with distinctive slang.

Starting from this week on, in each single of my Sunday I have to come to this city. It is about 3-4 hours from Surabaya where I am living now.  Surabaya and Madura Island is apart by Madura Island. Absolutely, it will be joyful experience, seeing sea in each single week.  At this city,  I will be dealing with elementary school teachers all around Sampang. I will be tutor for subject Computer and Learning Media. This tutorial is organized by Open University Indonesia, a public distant university in Indonesia.

Definitely, I  do so is not for money-oriented. To tell you the truth my salary is just paid of for transportation and accommodation only. But, it was calling from the bottom of my heart. Eventually, a happiness is not only all about when you have much money, but when you have something that you can share to others. In Indonesia there is wide development lack between cities and rural. I am very sure, right now, most of elementary school teaches do not know what a computer is, or just know the name but have no experience in using computer. That’s why, I have to introduce computer to them.

Actually, a little bit in my heart, I am afraid to be dealing with Madurese, since we have different culture and characters. But, I do hope everything will be Just fine.  With this sincerity, hopefully, everything is all right . See you Sampang !!
